International workshops aim at fostering international collaborations in specific areas of expertise from the field of materials and processing. These workshops are usually initiated by MaP members and broadened within the MaP community.
Previous international workshops held under the auspices of MaP
On 19-21 September 2016, MaP and the Area of Advance in Materials Science of the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg held the 4th Bilateral Workshop at ETH Hönggerberg. The theme of the workshop was "Soft Materials: From Polymers to Biomaterials" and featured a special session on "Cellulosic Materials".
On 27-28 November 2014 the 5th Symposium on Academic Exchange and Collaborative Research (AECoR) with Hokkaido University took place at ETH Zurich. The AECoR-5 was combined with a ceremony between the president of ETH Zurich and the Japanese ambassador on the occasion of the "150 Years Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Switzerland and Japan".
The Bilateral Workshop featured Mini-Symposia on "Mechanical Systems & Biomechanics", "Chemistry & Materials" and "Fluid Mechanics". Proceedings (PDF, 35.4 MB)
The SSSTC Workshop on "Bioinspired Materials and Surfaces" was held on 1-2 September 2014 at ETH Zurich.
This workshop aims at establishing closer contacts between Chinese and Swiss researchers in this field, in order to encourage more collaborative projects and potentially an exchange of students.
Bioinspired concepts in material and surface science represent a rapidly expanding field. While early developments covered relatively simple replication of surfaces in nature (e.g. water repellent and self-cleaning surfaces with topographies inspired by leaves of the Lotus plant), more recent concepts aim at the development of multiple functionalities, responsive systems and integration in devices. China and Switzerland have outstanding and complementary expertise in this particular and wide field of research and development.
