The ETH School for Continuing Education is responsible for all applications for admission to the ETH Sabbatical | CAS ETH AMaP programme.

    Applications to the programme may be submitted at any time throughout the year. The admission process is running continuously.
  • How soon will I receive a decision about programme admission? And how will that be communicated?
    You will receive a definitive written admission decision by the School for Continuing Education within eight weeks after submission of your application.

Application to and the start of the programme are possible at any time.

The successful completion of the programme is awarded with a Certificate of Advanced Studies diploma entitled "CAS ETH in Advanced Materials and Processes" (CAS ETH AMaP).

What are the costs involved?

Programme participants are responsible for their fees and other expenses, such as living costs. Please find further details below.

  • Fees
    The fee for the CAS ETH AMaP totally amounting to CHF 16,600 comprises programme costs plus one set of tuition fees (CHF 730). The whole fee is invoiced during the first semester of study (October or March) during which the ETH CAS is started.
  • Application fee
    ETH Zurich charges registration and administration fees for every online application for a continuing education programme. This fee must be paid by credit card.
    For applicants holding a degree from ETH or a Swiss university the charge is CHF 50; for applicants from other universities, it is CHF 150.
  • Withdrawal fee
    If you wish to withdraw your application before or after admission, please inform in writing immediately.
    Please note that withdrawal later than 60 days before the start of the programme is subject to a fee of CHF 8,000. This withdrawal fee is programme-specific, is listed in the admission letter, and is binding.
  • Other costs, e.g. living costs in Zurich
    CHF 24,000 should be calculated for living costs per year. Applicants from countries subject to visa requirements must be able to document that they have the corresponding financial resources. Please refer any related queries to the School for Continuing Education only.

Can I pay my fees in instalments?

No, the whole fee is due at once. The whole fee is invoiced during the first semester of study (October or March) during which the ETH Sabbatical is started.

What is the invoicing address and how can it be changed?

Invoices are sent by email to the ETH email address.
You may change the address on the invoice yourself. If a semester invoice should carry the employer’s address (c/o address), you may enter this at www.adressen.ethz.ch under "Separate mailing address for semester invoice". The changing of the invocing address has to be done (idealley) before the invoice has been sent.

Do you have any scholarships?

No scholarships are offered for this programme.

Is it possible to take courses outside of my focus area?

Generally, CAS ETH AMaP participants can choose from all courses and lectures offered at ETH Zurich, as far as conditions mentioned in the ETH course catalogue (VVZ) are met. Binding for the programme is the individual study plan which is subject to approval by the programme management.

What are the prerequisites for programme admission?

  • an engineering or natural sciences Master's degree (or equivalent), recognised by ETH Zurich, plus at least 5 years of professional experience in the field of materials, process and manufacturing technologies.
    Admission is based upon the personal dossier of the applicant. Highly qualified applicants who do not fulfil the prerequisites may be admitted in exceptional cases if they can prove that they have the appropriate professional background and additional qualifications in the required fields.
  • advanced German or English skills (please consult the below section 'Tuition Languages and Required Language Skills')
  • a letter of support from the current employer endorsing the candidate's participation at the programme.

There is no automatic entitlement to admission.

I do not have a Master's degree, will you still consider me?

A limited number of graduates from technical colleges with strong academic results and in-depth professional experience may also be considered.

How many years of professional experience are required for programme admission?

Programme participants require at least 5 years of professional experience.

Will you consider my application if I do not have a language certificate in German/English?

Yes, you do not need any certification.

How is the programme structured?

The programme comprises at least 12 ECTS credits equalling to 360 working hours. Together with a MaP mentor, participants design their own study plan along an individually-specified focus area. Depending on the individual interests and needs, the study plan may consist of the following elements:

  • research project
  • courses and lectures
  • knowledge transfer

How long is the programme?

Depending on the individually-arranged study plan, the programme is completed over the course of minimum 2 months full-time, or part-time during a maximum of 12 months. Accordingly, also the programme schedule may be personalised to meet individual requirements.

Are credits from previous studies transferable to this programme?

The ETH Sabbatical | CAS ETH AMaP programme ordinance does not permit the recognition of previously earned credits.

The programme is targeted at technical specialist professionals with an engineering or natural sciences Master's degree (or equivalent), with extensive industrial experience (at least 5 years) in the field of materials, process and manufacturing technologies.

Is there an age limit for entry to the programme?

There is no age limit. Given the requirement of a completed Master's degree plus at least 5 years of relevant industrial experience, participants are typically older than 30 years.

What is the language of tuition?

Tuition languages are German or English. C1-level is required in either German or English, and an advanced command of skills in the other language is highly desired. For help in estimating your language level, please refer to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Will you consider my application if I do not have a language certificate in German/English?

Yes, you do not need any certification.
